On March 8th, 2024, the Wall Street Journal published one of its best articles yet published on the Ukraine war, since it began reporting on the war nearly two years ago. Entitled, “Ukraine’s Crimea Defense,” the article appeared in the opinion section buried in the newspaper’s back pages.
The article’s byline states: “The West risks imperiling Kyiv’s progress on the peninsula by failing to provide enough weaponry.” The byline makes clear that the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal buried the article in its back pages to ensure that its primarily Republican readership could not become subject to its persuasion in time for the Biden Administration’s major push to renew funding for Ukraine’s un-winnable war.
The neo-conversatives, which have sought to pivot towards China, would not like to leave their Ukrainian pet project entirely in the dust, especially since the lion’s share of money Congress would approve for Ukraine would be allocated to the Pentagon where there are no audits. The fact that Julia Nuland, described as “regime change Karen,” resigned indicates that the Neo-conservatives have already decided behind closed doors that current military situation stemming from the 2014 Nuland coup d’état is a disaster from that US-led NATO cannot recover under any circumstance.
The more hawkish members of the Brzezinski cabinet believe that a last ditch effort on the Crimean peninsula could enable Ukraine to coerce Russia to the negotiating table from a “significant position of strength.” Although the plans for a Ukrainian attack on the Crimean peninsula are still secret, the plan would have to include a line of supply. Ukraine’s supply woes, for instance, hinder its ability to supply its existing fronts, let alone an entirely new front over land or sea.
Within the context of a ‘last ditch effort,” the article, which is one of the more well written pieces of work to come out of the Journal, deserves to be reviewed. A review shall be forthcoming within the next few days.
